Literature Circle Decisions

Last night my group met in the AET Zone to discuss what books we were going to discuss in our literature circles and what books we were going to post on the wiki. I actually wanted to choose a numbers book called "Old Black Fly" but Helena beat me to it, so I picked another good one, it's called The Z Was Zapped. It takes you through all the letters of the alphabet and each one is "on state" so to speak in a theatre setting. It describes how each letter reaches its demise in the book. For example, the z was zapped, the k was kidnapped, the v vanished, etc. It's really cute and I enjoyed reading it. I'm also reading another book from the "Myth's and Legends" section. It's a picture book with some really interesting and entertaining stories. Each story is succinct and well written and no story goes on for more than four pages. I made sure all the books I chose were in my school's library, so I wouldn't have to buy any new books. I wouldn't mind buying the books, but my son is now seven years old and has really grown out of alphabet and counting books. I look forward to chatting with my group members about the books we've selected in the discussion board. I use literature circles quite often in my classroom and I really enjoy them. I also learned about literature circles in my undergraduate coursework (language arts methods - children and adolescent literature). We read many childrens books (like we did in this class) and discussed them in lit. circles at each class meeting. Each of us had a different job to do (connector, discussion director, illustrator, vocab. enricher, etc.). The only piece we missed was chatting with the children from other schools, but our professor had done that before with another class. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to do it now!
